Bennigans Monte Cristo Sandwich

Bennigan's makes the most awesome Monte Cristo sandwiches. A great break from the usual toasted ham & cheese.

Ingredients:

Serves: 3

Yield: 3.0 sandwic ...

• 9 slices whole wheat bread
• 3 slices cooked turkey
• 3 slices cooked ham
• 3 slices American cheese
• 3 slices swiss cheese

Batter

• 1 egg
• 1 -1 ¼ cup water
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Directions:

1. Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread.
2. Place third slice.
3. in-between and secure the triple-decker sandwich in the corners with tooth picks.
4. Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together.
5. Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder.
6. Beat batter until smooth.
7. Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface.
8. Carefully place in hot oil and fry until golden.
9. When sandwich has turned a warm gold color remove from hot oil and place on paper towel.
10. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the tooth picks.
11. Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle.
12. with powder sugar.
13. Serve with Raspberry jam.

Boy were these babies good! I really liked making this recipe, and it didn't take very long. We had a nice lunch of these sandwiches and fruit salad. All of the flavors together were so good. Thanks for sharing this keeper!!

Followed recipe exactly and fried in deep fryer. Tastes amazingly good even without perserves to dip in. Thanks for a wonderful recipe

These came out perfect! I used hot pepper cheese in place of the American. I also pre-made the sandwiches, cut them in half, tightly wrapped them in plastic wrap (unbattered) and put them in the fridge for a few hours. This keeps them together while dipping them into the batter, without using toothpicks... In response to the "recipe hint" from Djemcee: your sandwiches only "sucked up grease" because your oil was not hot enough. When your oil is the right temp it will instantly seal the batter and prevent any oil from soaking into the sandwich. An oil thermometer helps.
