Perfect Corn Dogs

"I haven't yet found the perfect beer batter for onion rings, but as far as corn dogs go this recipe I found was perfect the very first time. The recipe will easily make 8 dogs--perhaps more I'm not exactly sure as I only had half a package when I made it & didn't use it all."

Questions & Replies

  1. Can I thin this some and coat boneless skinless chicken thighs for pan frying, deep frying or oven frying? Tks

  2. Does anyone have any thoughts about baking these instead of frying them? I’d like to eliminate the oil if possible. Thanks!

  3. Why is there so much surgar? This does not sound appealing to me.

  1. Made these for my niece's birthday party and they turned out great. I rolled the hotdogs in flour before I battered them. I also used a tall glass to pour the batter in and then dunk the hotdogs in before frying. Thanks for the great recipe!

  2. These were so good! I used all beef select hot dogs. Also did what others suggested and put mixture in a tall glass to coat. I read someplace that the batter sticks better to the hot dogs if they are dusted with some flour before dipping into the batter. So, I did dust them lightly with some flour after I had dried them thoroughly from the package. Worked perfect. When I dropped them in the oil I twisted them slightly so I would have a more round shape since I fried in a pan. If I had a big deep fryer that wouldn't have been an issue. The kids loved these as well as the husband who had finished off 4 by the end of the night!

  3. 10 stars! Something I wish was on that big roomy part of the food pyramid. Made for Alphabet Soup.

  4. I made these today and, being English, they were the first corn dogs I've ever had! I made them is Quorn hotdogs (a vegetarian alternative) and they were so delicious! I defrosted them and rolled them in flour first as suggested by other commenters and also used a glass for dunking. I used my 8-in-1 cooker so deep frying wasn't an issue. They were just so freaking amazing! Me and the boyfriend demolished them pretty quick. I will definitely be making these again!

  5. Soooo good! I have been making these for some time now. I use only 2 Tablespoons sugar, 1 egg, and add 1/4 tsp. of dry mustard into the flour/cornmeal mix. Also, I use chopsticks for the wooden skewers and put the batter into a large glass and dip the dogs into that! Now I don't have to go to the State Fair! LOL Thanks for posting.

Tweaks

  1. I added 2 tsp mustard powder; 1 tsp of garlic powder to the batter.

  2. Made this for my Mom and my 18month old son. My son and my mother are both allergic to dairy but with the added allergy of soy for my son as well. So I substituted the milk for his coconut milk. Still delicious! And my son loved them. Finally another food I can add to his short list of foods he can eat. My mother gave them two thumbs up too...she's a corn dog fan. Thank you!

  3. Spongy and Flavorless

  4. Sugar
